Word Whirled: Octavia Butler

Octavia ButlerOctavia Estelle Butler

I was fortunate enough to see the magical Octavia Butler at CUNY Graduate Center on Wednesday. Oh Oh Oh. I asked her a question about writing the novel, and her advice totally helped around my problem! I ended up writing furiously in my journal today on the train, hearing voices, seeing places...thank you, oh Sci Fi Goddess of my youth! You can see more the talk here, at a live journal website of her fans. (Warning: Don't look down too far, it contains Fledgling spoilers!) Someone was kind enough to transcribe nearly the entire talk, and include her response to my question about process.

Yes, I already finished Fledgling, today, WAAAH! and the ending hints at a sequel...YEAH!

This has nothing to do with "Fledgling," but you don't have an e-mail link on your blog. Eager to meet you since we have a few things in common: screenname "Soucouyant," Trininess, same-sex desire, literary stuff, a few friends. A friend mistook your blog for me.

One of the most challenging and enjoyable units I've ever taught was when I collaborated with my history teaching partner, and we taught Kindred while the kids were learning about America in the early-mid 1800s.

To read Butler as she takes a modern woman through the experience of being a slave made the history real and much more painful and powerful for the kids.
